Hello! My name is Janel Mielke and I am the leader of the Student Learning Advocate Team. My family and I live in Sheboygan Falls, but I grew up in a rural area in Manitowoc County and graduated from Valders High School. I went on to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a minor in Language Arts. After a semester of substitute teaching, I was hired at Northern Ozaukee Middle School and have been with the Northern Ozaukee School District ever since. For the first nine years of my career, I taught seventh and eighth grade reading, language arts, science, and civics in the brick and mortar middle school. During this time, I also completed my Master’s Degree in Reading and Language Arts at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee. For the past six years, I have been with Wisconsin Virtual Learning. Now, I am beginning my sixteenth year in education – and my seventh in the virtual setting. I look forward to another great year communicating with families!

I have really enjoyed my time as a Student Learning Advocate for Wisconsin Virtual Learning! It has been incredible to partner closely with students and their families, as we work together to develop an individualized learning plan for each student. I earned my Bachelor's Degree with high honors in Spanish and Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. During my time at the university, I participated in a study abroad program which provided me with the opportunity to live with a family in Spain and explore parts of Africa, the Czech Republic, and Germany. My love for traveling likely grew from my nomadic upbringing, moving from Canada to Texas to Massachusetts to New Jersey to Pennsylvania and then to Virginia, before finally settling down here in Wisconsin. I look forward to another year of working alongside our WVL families and look forward to contributing to the academic success and personal growth of our students throughout the state of Wisconsin.

I am excited to serve Wisconsin Virtual Learning and our families as a Student Learning Advocate (SLA). It has been my pleasure to work closely with the administration, teaching staff, and families as we strive toward success for each of our students. My journey in education began in Indiana, earning an undergraduate degree from Purdue University and a graduate degree at Ball State University while working as an University Extension/Youth Agent with the 4-H Program. My experience teaching at Port Washington High School in their Family Consumer Education Department and at Ozaukee High School has given me the opportunity to work closely with many students. My husband, Dick, and I raised our family in the Fredonia area and our children are all graduates of Ozaukee High School. Our son recently graduated from college and we have two daughters attending out of state colleges this fall. I look forward to serving WVL families this school year!

Throughout my career I have followed a pattern of working with children in a wide variety of settings. I am a licensed social worker and understand the importance of guidance, assistance and confidentiality. I have always employed a “can do” attitude and take serious pride in my performance. I am excited to be a part of the Student Learning Advocate Team and look forward to another fantastic year working with families.
